Deer
One night, while soaring over the treetops by the meadow, Ansuz saw a large creature. It stood very still in the night. Ansuz dropped down for a closer look.
The creature looked like an animal Ansuz's siblings had once described. A deer, they had called it.
The deer looked up as Ansuz approached.
Ansuz said, "Hello."
The deer did not answer. Instead, it held Ansuz in its gaze another moment, then bounded away into the woods. Ansuz did not follow, just in case the deer was scared. But what a beautiful creature it was!
Still, the deer sighting was the only real contact Ansuz had with anyone that night. As it turned out, the forest could be a lonely place when there were no other forest faeries around. |
